A superfood is a food product that is high in nutrition and very popular with consumers. It tends to be something which is seen to be extremely healthy and is also trendy. Often it is a product which has been highly marketed as having great nutritious properties.
Examples of superfoods are things like blueberries, goji berries and acai berries. These are all products which are nutritionally rich and also have been well marketed.
There are other fruits which are as nutritionally good, but have been on the market for a long time and are not benefiting from the same marketing as these and therefore are not so trendy at the moment.
There has been criticism of superfoods because of this – that the marketing may imply that they are the best source of particular nutrients when there are other foods which also contain them. It is not a term accepted by nutritionists or dietitians and they claim that it is being overused.
However, because the foods are nutritionally rich, there is no reason why consumers should be put off by the fact that there may be other good sources of the nutrients in them.
It is also worth noting that the term superfood, may seem to be a new one but in fact has been recorded as early as 1915 to mean a nutritionally dense food and so although some of the new foods on to the market have been labelled with this term, the term itself is not new and people have been seeking nutritionally rich foods for a long time.
